1GW! Africa will build the largest photovoltaic project

2024-09-14 15:42

AMEA Power will develop the largest photovoltaic project in Africa and take the lead in implementing a utility-scale battery energy storage solution in Egypt.

AMEA Power is investing an additional $800 million in two new breakthrough renewable energy projects in Egypt. This strengthens AMEA Power's position as a major player in Egypt's clean energy sector, bringing its total PV and wind project capacity in the country to 2,000MW, with 900MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS).

AMEA Power, one of the fastest growing renewable energy companies, has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to develop Africa's largest solar PV and Egypt's first utility-scale battery energy storage system.

Following the successful development of the 500MW Abydos solar PV project, AMEA Power has secured two new landmark renewable energy projects in Egypt. The first project is a new 1,000 MW solar PV plant in Benban district, Aswan province, equipped with 600 MWH of BESS, which will mark a historic milestone for the largest solar PV and BESS project in Africa; The second project, 300MWh BESS, is an expansion of the company's 500MW Abydos solar photovoltaic power plant currently under construction in Kom Ombo, Aswan Province, which will be the first to use utility-scale BESS solutions in Egypt.

On September 12, AMEA Power signed a power purchase agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company for the two projects. The projects are expected to create approximately 2,500 jobs at the peak of construction and provide clean, renewable energy to more than 769,800 homes, offsetting more than 2,347,000 tons of carbon emissions annually.

AMEA Power Chairman Hussain Al Nowais said: "As the developer of Africa's largest PV project and the first in Egypt to carry out BESS, the project not only sets a new benchmark for the renewable energy industry in Egypt and the continent, but also demonstrates our leadership and innovative spirit in pushing the boundaries of what is possible. We are honored to play such a key role in shaping the future of clean energy in Egypt and on the European continent, where these projects are not only a catalyst for power generation, but also for economic growth, job creation and community empowerment."

AMEA Power's projects in Egypt include: 500MW+300MWh Abydos solar PV project, which will be commissioned in October 2024.

The 500MW Amunet wind power project, which is under construction and will be commissioned in the third quarter of 2025; Another 1000MW solar PV project with 600MW hour BESS.

Significant investments in renewable energy will not only improve Egypt's energy security and diversification, but will also contribute to the country's ambitious clean energy goals. Given Egypt's recent prolonged power outages, both projects, once operational, will help support the country.

AMEA Power will continue to work closely with local communities as part of its commitment to socio-economic development and will undertake key social initiatives under its Community Investment and Development Program.
